Do You Need Base Coat & Top Coat When Applying Nail Polish?

Before I started using the latest nail trend, Color Street I never applied a base coat and occasionally used a top coat when I polished my nails.  I thought they were just an extra steps or some way to get me to buy more products and I definitely didn’t want the extra time involved. Well now I know the answer is a big YES!  You do need a base coat and a top coat when you do a manicure and this is why.

Do I Need to Apply a Base Coat Before I Polish My Nails?

You may ask yourself if you really need to apply a base coat before you polish your nails. Unless you want chipping yellow nails the answer is YES.

Our fingernails have natural oils that can keep nail polish from adhering well.  In order to make sure your manicure lasts a long time you need to apply a base coat before you apply your color coat.  Think of the base coat like the foundation of a house.  You have to have a good foundation for the house to hold up…right?

The base coat gives a little flexibility and helps prevent chipping.  It also evens the surface of nails that might be a little rigid so when you polish them they are smooth.  This helps the polish adhere better.  Not using a base may cause your nails to become dry and brittle and may turn a yellowish color.  A base coat is your best defense against staining because it adds a clear protective layer between the nail and the color of the polish.

Do I Need to Apply Top Coat?

So that explains the need for the base coat.  Now what about the top coat.  Is that also necessary?  Again that’s a YES.   The top coat is the last layer applied in the manicure process.  In addition to adding shine and preventing scratches, the top coat works to protect your polish from chipping and peeling.  The top coat acts as a sealer to the colored polish.  When the polish is sealed, it does not chip as often so it helps make your manicure last long.

Base Coat and Top Coat Should Be Applied When Doing a Manicure

Expert advice says not to skip these two important steps.  Protecting and sealing the nails will make for a beautiful manicure.  You need to allow plenty of time (at least 30 minutes) after base coat has been applied before you apply several thin layers of color coat.  Then once the color coat is dry to the touch you can apply the top coat and again wait until it is completely dry.
